Quality ControlTesting in Lab

The Boggs Quality Control Department has an AASHTO accredited testing laboratory facility. AASHTO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation) is the voice for transportation and a catalyst for organizational and technical excellence. It advocates transportation policies and provides technical services to support states in their efforts to efficiently and safely move people and goods.

An AASHTO accredited company is held to a higher level of competency and strives for excellence in the transportation industry.

The Quality Control (QC) Department is staffed by experienced technicians who take a professional approach to guarantee the products produced at each asphalt plant will meet or exceed the quality and dependability expected by our internal and external customers. Boggs Materials, Inc. has North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) and South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) certified testing laboratories at each of our five asphalt plant locations run by NCDOT/SCDOT certified technicians.

Each plant technician is responsible for testing the asphalt according to each state or customer specifications. Some of the responsibilities here include:

  • Properly collecting a sample from the truck
  • Monitor plant mixing temperatures
  • Breaking it down to test for liquid asphalt content
  • Determine the Volumetric Properties of compacted (gyrated) asphalt specimens and the specific gravity of the asphalt mix

Testing in Lab

  • Measuring the particle size of each mix by gradations

Each roadway technician is responsible for testing the asphalt as it is being placed in the field. This is a key area for positive results. The roadway technician:

  • Sets up roller patterns and makes sure they are followed properly
  • Monitors roadway temperatures
  • Calculates tack, dilution and lay down rates
  • Checking density after the paver lays the asphalt mix and after each roller
  • Cuts core samples to check for actual density results
  • Ensures good quality practices are being followed

Both the lab and roadway technicians play an enormous role in making certain the product developed in the lab and plant maintains high quality on the roadway.

Our QC department also focuses on new asphalt mix designs and how each design will need to be prepared to meet the needs of our clients. Since we only use material from Buckhorn Materials, we are able to have better control over our mixes by using single size aggregate materials. These designs are the first step in producing a high-quality mix which each asphalt plant can produce to meet client demands.

Testing on Hwy 218The QC department also takes an active role with the NCDOT, SCDOT and other organizations to lead innovations in the asphalt industry while being environmentally friendly. Department personnel have been involved in the development and implementation of new state mix designs as well as new state specs for both North and South Carolina. We work with Clemson University and the National Center for Asphalt Technology (NCAT) to experiment with the use of high percentage recycled asphalt product (RAP). We also have the resources to experiment with recycled asphalt shingles. In addition, Boggs is one of the first companies in the Carolinas to produce Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA), a new technology and intense topic within the industry. There are significant benefits to using WMA, including a reduction of fuel consumption and greenhouse gases, while getting a better product on the road.

Boggs is dedicated to providing a top quality product to our clients while maintaining a focus on a greener future!
